New Year, TRUE You.
It’s a brand new year, full of promise.
And as usual, this first week has been full of messages about creating a new you.
Often, you receive this message subconsciously and accept that you need to reinvent yourself. You feed the impulse to change who you are. You convince yourself that you will be happier and more fulfilled once you achieve – insert whatever goal you set to overcome your greatest insecurity here – . You get excited and feel good about it!
…and then you don’t.
Well, guess what?! You are the same you. And you are pretty great exactly how you are. Exceptional, really.
Through infinite little (and big) experiences, each of us develops a lens through which we perceive the world. This lens colors the beliefs we develop about ourselves. The beliefs we hold about ourselves affect every choice we make, every thought we form, every word we speak, every action we take. In turn, all of those thoughts, words, actions and choices generate responses from the world around us that – generally – support the beliefs we have about ourselves.
It is a self-perpetuating cycle.
Over time, we form layers around our truest Self. Many layers of belief can help us cope with life’s difficulties. Like armor, they can help us feel protected and ‘safe.’ Year after year, those layers pile on and they can become SO. DARN. HEAVY.

Yoga, meditation and mindfulness are all tools for peeling away the layers you have acquired over time and revealing the true you. Each time you attain a new level of awareness, one of those layers is shed. Each time one of those layers is shed, you feel lighter and more aligned with your truest Self. When a long-held belief shifts, your thoughts/words/actions will also evolve to support the new belief.
Engaging with tools such as yoga, meditation and/or mindfulness can create a new cycle – one which cultivates more sustainable growth, a more supportive framework for becoming the best (and yes, truest) version of you, a return to your lightness of being.
So cheers to the New Year, and the TRUE You.
