Peru & Machu Picchu — Journey of a lifetime!

Pre–Retreat  Welcome dinner in Cusco

Meet your fellow yogis and sojourners for an opening dinner we organize at our favorite restaurant in the heart of Cusco!  Following dinner, you will stay at your own hotel, and next morning (29th) we’ll pick you up and bring you to our retreat center. We strongly recommend you arrive in Cusco by December 26 or 27 to rest and acclimate to the altitude. Cusco is wonderful and safe to wander on your own!

Day 1 • Depart for the Sacred Valley retreat center & visit Moray Circles

After breakfast, a van will pick you up and take you to our retreat center in the Sacred Valley (1.5 hours). En route, stop and explore the mysterious terraced circles at the Moray archeological site, surrounded by stunning agricultural plains and majestic mountains. Arrive at our retreat center in time for a welcome lunch and an introduction to our lovely Quechua staff. The afternoon is yours to wander the grounds, relax in your lush, garden-side room or enjoy a spa treatment or outdoor bath!  We’ll convene in the yoga studio at 4:30 for our opening yoga class, followed by a delicious farm-to-table organic dinner prepared by ingredients grown on site.

Day 2 • Hike the ancient ruins of P’isaq & New Year’s Eve with a Shaman

Begin this heart-opening day with a drive through the Sacred Valley to an isolated Quechua mountain school which few tourists are privileged to visit. Cherish the children’s warmth, joy and openness and leave humbled and deeply moved.  Next, visit the spectacular ruins in Písac with a hike to the ancient Incan Temple of the Sun, a perfect place for silent meditation overlooking the sacred valley. Hiking down the mountain, you will arrive at the famous Písac market where you can choose a café for lunch in the market square and after, shop for woven goods, jewelry, wall hangings and hand-painted beadwork. Return to our resort with time for a late-afternoon group gathering and festivities to celebrate the New Year!

Day 3 • Pachamama Day ~ Revitalize Body & Spirit!

This day is dedicated to Pachamama, who represents Mother Earth. After morning yoga and breakfast, we’ll have a guided tour of the phenomenal Chakra Gardens… you have never seen flowers like this! Unwind, enjoy the spa, take a hike and connect with nature. Today is a day to nourish your body with healthy meals and deep yoga, and your spirit with tea-leaf readings and a transformative fire ceremony led by a shaman healer from the high Andes. The ceremony serves as a wonderful preparation of mind, body and spirit for your pilgrimage to Machu Picchu.

Day 4 • Welcome the New Year in a silent morning retreat & New Year hike!

Enjoy deep peace and tranquility in a silent New Year’s morning, with meditation, yoga and time to just “be” in the gardens. As a sojourner, you were called to the Sacred Valley. Today is a gift dedicated to you. In silence, enjoy the pure energy of the Chakra Gardens. Feel Pachamama’s embrace and allow her to whisper her wisdom to your soul. At lunch we will break silence. More active guests may take a 2-hour hike climbing the zigzag paths of the ancient Maras Salt Farms… or indulge in an Andean spa treatment to pamper body and soul.

Day 5 • Journey to Machu Picchu!

After an early breakfast we’ll catch the morning train (a stunning 1.5 hours ride) to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to ancient Machu Picchu. After setting down set our overnight bag down at our hotel, we’ll enjoy a fabulous guided tour of Machu Picchu.  We’ll journey through temples of spiritual power, breath-taking mountains and connect with one of the most spectacular energy places on Earth!  The even will be a celebratory three-course dinner in a fun and lively restaurant in Aguas Calientes, followed by a well-earned deep sleep!

Day 6 • Machu Picchu hike

General Information & FAQ’s

1. Travel Visa
No visas are required for South African, Canadian or USA citizens. Your Passport must be valid for 3-6 months from arrival date in Peru. You will be stamped with a tourism card at arrival which you must hold on to for departure. Please check with your Consolate to see if you need a VISA if you are from a country not listed above.

2. Weather in Peru
December/January is Peru’s summer. It tends to be warmer and wetter than the winter “dry season”. However, rainfall generally occurs at night and the days are generally sunny and in the high 70’s with lows at night in the 50’s. It is a wonderful time to be in Peru as the abundant plant life is in bloom, the tourist season is quieter and the rains can bring beautiful misty mornings at Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. See weather here.

3. Money | Cash | Credit Cards
Yes, you will want money for a few lunches on your own and any additional services or gifts you may choose to purchase while in Peru. US Dollars: Please note that overly worn American dollars with rips or tears will not be accepted in Peru. The banks do not accept torn or worn US currency and no one else does either. Bring US currency in $20-$100 denominations, as crisp and new as possible. $1 bills are not accepted. We suggest that you wait until you arrive in Cusco to exchange money in reputable exchange agencies or ATM’s. Peru is a cash country and local tourist markets do not accept credit cards. Only high-end tourist shops and expensive restaurants accept credit cards.

4. Wifi
There is Wi-Fi access. Feel free to sit in the Wi-Fi Wasi or the surrounding social space gardens to use your computer or other electronic devices (cell phones, iPhones, iPads, laptops, etc.). Please refrain from bringing these devices into the reception, bar and dining areas or near guests relaxing in the gardens.

5. Cell Service
Depending on your carrier, you will most likely have cell service. If not, you can use Skype, as the wifi signal is strong.

6. Tips & Gratuities
Your highly qualified guide will travel with you at all times to assist you and ensure that you have a wonderful journey. It is customary in Peru to tip the guide directly. Feel free to show your appreciation to the guide. The amount of money offered to the guide is at your discretion. Please plan to make this offering collectively during the last evening meal of the program.

7. Power Adaptor
Converter or transformer to 220V, 60 cycles AC for any equipment plugging into a wall socket. Mac products are OK to plug in.

8. Yoga Props
Since we will be using a beautiful Yoga Sanctuary Studio, you do not need to bring any yoga props with you. There are mats, blocks, straps and more all there for your use.
